1. What is hospice?
The term "hospice" dates back to medieval times when it referred to a place of rest for weary or ill travelers. Today, hospice care is about increasing an individual's quality of life by providing physical, emotional, and spiritual support to patients and their families as they face the challenges associated with a life-limiting illness. The focus of care is on pain management or palliative care.
2. When is an individual ready for hospice care?
When all active treatment is completed and an individual is facing the challenges of a life-limiting illness.
3. What services does hospice provide?
Medical services, home health aide services, social workers, spiritual support, volunteer services and bereavement support.
4. How does hospice philosophy differ from standard medical practice?
Hospice is about an individual's right to choose how they wish to be cared for in the final phase of their life. Hospice believes that all persons have the right to live in dignity and free from pain until the natural event of death occurs.
5. What area does the Center for Hope & Palliative Care serve?
Union, Middlesex, and Essex counties are the primary areas served by the Center for Hope Hospice & Palliative Care.
6. Where do I go for referral?
Your physician, a community agency, friend, or relative may refer you or your loved ones to the Center for Hope Hospice & Palliative Care, or you may call the office yourself. Our number is 908

7. What are the criteria for admission?
Criteria for admission include:
- The patient and family understanding and agreeing with the hospice concept of "palliative" versus "curative" care.

The patient's diagnosis being consistent with a life-limiting illness.

The attending physician's finding the patient appropriate for hospice and agreeing to work with our hospice team.
8. How is the Center for Hope & Palliative Care paid for its services?
Hospice care is provided based upon your need, not according to your ability to pay. Many of our services are covered under the home health benefits of your insurance policy.
The Center for Hope & Palliative Care receives reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance and many HMOs. No patient is ever denied service because of inability to pay.
9. How are services paid for that are not reimbursed by insurance?
Memorial contributions and charitable donations provide partial coverage of
services provided without reimbursement.
10. How do I make a donation?
Donations can be made either by check or credit card
(MasterCard or Visa). Please send checks to the Center for Hope Hospice &
